February 17, 1961:

Winthrop University is now a co-ed, integrated institution, but this was not the case prior to 1964. 19 African American Friendship College women were inspired by the audacity and bravery of the their fellow Friendship College peers that they picketed outside of Winthrop College for the right to apply. At this time, African American women were denied the right to even apply to Winthrop, much less be accepted into the school.

February 18, 1961:

News of the nine became national and protestors not only began practicing this themselves, but two protestors in Washington D.C. dressed up in convict costumes (black and white striped jumpsuits) and walked in honor of the Rock Hill nine.

February 20, 1961:

Also in Washington D.C., two white protestors joined over 200 other picketers to march downtown outside of the Capitol and the White House. At this point, white Civil Rights activists were getting more involved in the movement and many would later join the Freedom Rides and go as far as to also be arrested.
