Students continued to picket, protest, sit-in and refuse bail in Rock Hill, and other towns across the South did the same. A lot were successful in achieving integration at the lunch counters, but not all were. In fact, some lunch counters closed their doors for good due to the sit-in movement, while others dragged their feet to integrate. But students continued to practice their freedoms through these non-violent tactics for years.

Fall of 1964:

Cynthia Roddey became the first African American female student enrolled at Winthrop
College. Although those 19 females picketed three years prior, it took the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to be passed in order for even one African American female to be allowed a higher education at Winthrop. This was true for many white-only universities, especially in the South.
